Patrick Sarsfield O’Hegarty (1879-1955) was a Irish nationalist journalist, editor and historian who was also a member of the Supreme Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Born in 1879 in Carrignavar, County Cork, he was a childhood friend of Terence MacSwiney, who would later die on hunger strike during the Irish War of Independence. He joined the IRB and was also involved in the Gaelic League and Sinn Féin. He also contributed articles to the United Irishman and Irish Freedom, the latter of which he served as an editor. Following the War of Independence, O’Hegarty supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty and spent his later years working as a civil servant as a secretary in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
