Charlotte Elizabeth McManus (1853-1944) was an Irish nationalist novellist and historian. Born in Castlebar, County Mayo, McManus was an active member of the Gaelic League and frequent contributor to the nationalist organs of her day, contributing both prose and fiction. Guided by a belief that Irish fiction should derive its inspiration from Irish history as a form of national pride, McManus was the contributor of several prominent novels, including In Sarsfield’s Days, Nuala, and The Professor in Erin. McManus would die in her native County Mayo on 5 October 1944, at the age of 91.
