John Patrick Prendergast (1808-1893) was an Irish historian best known for his authoritative work The History of the Cromwellian Settlement in Ireland, published in 1863. Born to a Protestant family in Dublin, Prendergast was a land agent by profession. A critic of James Anthony Froude and of English historiography relating to its conquest of Ireland, Prendergast was nonetheless a liberal who opposed Home Rule.
