Archbishop Michael Francis Howley (1843-1914) was the Roman Catholic Prelate of the city of St. John’s in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Born to a family of Irish immigrants, Howley was the author of a famous folk poem, The Flag of Newfoundland, celebrating the Newfoundland Tricolour, an unofficial flag of the province bearing close resemblance to the Irish tricolour, with Newfoundland often regarded as the ‘most Irish place outside of Ireland.’
